Jammu and Kashmir state faces a 30% loss component in horticulture sector due to post harvest discrepancies.
The main reason for losses are many but poor infrastructure, inadequate facilities are the main culprits which stifle the growth.
Horticulture sector plays a very proactive role in the growth of State,s GDP but certain problems and weaknesses are proving as hindrances for the growth to the sector.
In absence of any post harvest mechanism in place substantial amount of wastage is experienced in the said sector particularly fresh fruit which is perishable in nature. At present post harvest losses have been pegged at 30%.
We have 10% loses at field, 5% loses at transportation level, 2% during packaging, 9% at storage and 4% at processing level.
